Sitebuilder Causes 500 Internal Server Error

Free Sitebuilder on PHP-Web-Host.com

As you know, PHP-Web-Host.com offers free Sitebuilder to all you aspiring, but technically challenged web designers. Sitebuilder is a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) web editor with built in themes for designing your websites.

I recently had the "pleasure" of activating Sitebuilder for one of our hosting client's, but it simply wouldn't work. After publishing the Sitebuilder web page, the server would not display any pages, and gave only an error page, 500 Internal Server Error.

After having pulled out what little hair I have left on my head, I had to investigate.

Eventually, what I discovered is that Sitebuilder publishes their own .htaccess file to your webserver, and this .htaccess file causes the internal server misconfiguration error.

Our solution was simple. Delete the .htaccess file and the site now runs like a dream. It turns out that this is a known bug in Sitebuilder on some of their themes, but they have yet to provide a solution!!!

As an alternative, we'd recommend easyCMSlite, the free, easy CMS (content management system).

Please leave your questions, or comments about how you battled and eventually fixed this problem on your own server.
