How to Transfer a co.za Domain Name

Domain name Transfer

At times you may need or want to transfer your domain name from one web hosting company to another. The best way of making sure that this process is easy is to be in control of your own domain name (or at least using a reputable web hosting company - see our article "Who owns your domain name".

Regardless of who is in control of your domain name, the process for transferring remains the same. When transferring your domain name, there are essentially four parties involved. Those are the current web hosting company, the new web hosting company, you and Unform. Uniform is the domain name registrar for co.za domain names. This is the only registrar for co.za domain names.

Uniform allows you to manage your domain names (including changing contact information, deleting a domain name, transferring a domain, etc), through email tickets. You download the domain name update template from their site and fill in the required information. For a domain name transfer you will change the contact details of the current web hosting company to the new one, as well as the name servers (where the domain points to).

So, you fill in the email and send it off. In order to ensure that domains are not changed by unauthorised people, Uniform has a 24 hour delay between request. When they receive an update or transfer request they will send an email to the gaurdians. The gaurdians are all of the email addresses which they have on file for that domain name. Typically that would be your and the current hosting company.

These gaurdians will receive and email which is basically asking for permission to make the changes to the domain name. If none of the gaurdians reply, then the update will fail. If at least one acknowledgement is sent, AND no denies, then the update will take place. If one deny is sent (regardless of how many acknowledgements are sent), then the update will fail.

What to do if you are planning on transferring your domain name to us (or any other web host)

Because your current web hosting company will be receiving an update request from Uniform, you MUST inform the current host that you are planning on transferring your domain name. If you do not inform them, they will in all likelihood deny the transfers when they receive the transfer request email from Uniform. This makes sense as they are trying to protect your domain name from some unscrupulous person trying to steal it away.

Once your current web host knows about the transfer you may proceed (or ask the new web hosting company to) with the domain name transfer.

NB! When you receive the email request from Uniform, you MUST reply with your acknowledgement by deleting the word deny in the email (don't worry, they will send an email with instructions). The reason that this is important is that your current web hosting company may simply ignore the emails from Uniform once you've informed them about the update. They may very well leave it up to you to initiate and accept the transfer. If you do not, and they do not, then as mentioned before, the transfer will fail.

Sound complicated?

Sorry about that. Its actually really easy, but if you're still unsure, then leave it to us. The only thing you have to do is notify your current web hosting company about your intention to transfer.
