In this article in the web hosting, domain names blog, we'll look into domain name ownership. Who owns your domain name, and how can you protect your domain name?

When registering your web hosting account, you'll undoubtedly want to register a domain name for your site. A domain name is a "friendly" name for your website, eg, www.php-web-host.com is our domain name. Ordinarily, when you register your web hosting space with web hosting companies like PHP-Web-Host.com, you will get them to register a domain name on your behalf. This makes sense as you will only have one bill to pay and one point of support.

There are some things you should be aware of. When registering domain names, there is generally some mechanism to protect the domain name from being transferred to someone else without your permission. This mechanism is needed, but it could mean you loose control of your own domain name. That is, if the web hosting company, for what ever reason, becomes unresponsive, how do you manage your own domain name.

What happens if you want to change web hosting companies?

If you want to transfer your web hosting account to another web hosting company for whatever reason, you will need to transfer your domain name too. Typically, for .com domain names, this requires the use of an EPP transfer code, and for .co.za domain names this requires using emailed tickets.

Before asking the web hosting company you're planning on using to register your domain, find out what their policy is should you decide to transfer to another company. Remember, your domain name is your most valuable piece of internet real estate and you need to protect it.

How to manage your own domain name

So, what if you are nervous and want to manage your own domain name? Well, its really not that difficult. You simply register your domain name with a domain name registrar yourself, and use the nameservers provided by your web hosting account to "point" the domain name to the web hosting accounts web space.

This process is very simple and for .com (and most other) domain names, it is a simple online form in the registrar's control panel. For co.za domain names, this uses the same email tickets talked about above.

For example, click here to see the nameservers for php-web-host.co.za and scroll down to near the bottom to see the nameservers. Cliok here to see the nameservers for php-web-host.com, and see the nameservers section. The name servers are ns1.php-web-host.com and ns2.php-web-host.com.

If we wanted to change to another web host (and we dont want to!!!), then we could simply update those nameserves. Easy as that.

So, if you are sure that your web hosting company will not stop replying to your requests, feel free to ask them to register your domain name with your web hosting space. But remember, that there are some companies (even big, well known ones) which will let you down. See the first client testimonial on how we had to manually intervene to regain control of their domain name from another provider at the bottom of the page..
