skel directory

skeleton directory
Under Linux, the administrator can create a skeleton directory, called a skel directory. The administrator will use this skel directory to place files and folder he wants all new users to the system to see. So, for example, on a linux server, the administrator might place licensing or useage guideline documenation in the skel directory. When a new user is created on the server, the skel directory’s contents are copied to the new users account so that those documents are available to them

How does a skel directory work web hosting?

With our web hosting being on Linux web hosting servers, you, as a white lable web hosting reseller have access to your very own skel directory. You can place your own files into this directory, and when a new web hosting account is created under your reseller web hosting account, the contents of the skel directory will be copied to the public_html folder of the new user.
This allows you to place a file which says “New web hosting account registered by sss Web Hosting co.”, or similiar. This is desirable, otherwise new accounts are empty and anyone landing on this domain sees only a blank directory listing.

Where is the skel directory?

Skel directories are only available to resellers, and then only under your main reseller account. To get to the skel directory, FTP in to the server (or use the file manager in Cpanel). The directory is at the same level as your own public_html folder. In other words, its one level higher than your web page files. The skel directory is called “cpanel3-skel”. Anything you place here will be copied to your new client accounts public_html folders and will be viewable by the world!

Which files can I place into the skel directory?

Any files you can place into a website, you can place into the skel directory. This includes HTML files, javascript, PHP, or files to download. Typically a short message telling the world that the site is newly registered and a link back to your own site would be sufficient. We actually have a domain name lookup utility on our skel pages, so anyone landing on a newly created web hosting account can do a whois lookup of their domain name!
