CPanel web hosting disk quota

You might want to know how much of your web hosting disk quota you have left on your CPanel® web hosting account. For instance, you may have received an email warning you that you’re running out of  disk space. To see your web hosting disk quota, log into CPanel®.

In the left hand info bars you will see an overview of what your disk quota is, and how much you’ve used. This is available under the “Stats” block, and the “Disk Space Usage” bar shows a visual representation as well as the actual numbers in Mb.

If you see that your CPanel® web hosting disk quota is running out, or already has run out, then you can view more detail about what is using your web hosting disk space.

To view the detail, click on the “Disk Space Usage” icon in the “Files” section.

Disk Space Usage View

The disk space usage screen has two sections. The section at the top gives an overview of disk space, however the really useful part of that screen is the second half (which ironically looks less impressive!). The second half of the CPanel® web hosting disk quota screen shows in which directories (folders) the disk space is being used.

It has three columns, “Directory”, “MB” and “bytes”. At the top, next to the little home icon, it shows the total amount of disk space used. In the image below, we can see that the total disk space used is 641Mb. The mail directory contains 80Mb data. To view more specific information about a certain directory, click on the plus sign to the left of the directory name. This will show you all directories under than one (subdirectories).

You can continue to expand subdirectories until you’ve found where your disk space is being used up. More often than not, the disk space will be used up in the mail directory. Using this tool you can check which account is not clearing out their old emails, or, if its in the public_html folder where your website’s files belong, you can quickly see if there are old files which you can delete (for instance, old backup files, etc).
